"The Dobbs' Brace" offers Children and Parents a better alternative compared with traditional clubfoot bracing.

Find out more information about Dr. Dobbs.

The Dobbs Clubfoot System (DCS) was developed by Dr. Matthew Dobbs who specializes in pediatric foot deformities at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Dr. Dobbs designed his brace to prevent the recurrence of clubfoot after successful initial correction with the Ponseti method or with surgery.

In a traditional Fixed Foot Abduction Brace like a Dennis Brown Bar the child is unable to move his/her legs independently of each other. With the traditional Foot Abduction Brace the child must be taught to kick and swing his/her legs simultaneously while in the orthosis. The Dobbs Brace allows independent leg movement so the child can kick and bend each leg individually. This makes for a smother transition period as the child is less likely to fuss and get irritable because his/her legs are locked together. The Dobbs brace also makes it easier for the child to crawl.

In addition to the freedom of leg movement the Dobbs brace uses two custom molded Ankle Foot Orthoses (AFO’s) attached to the dynamic foot abduction bar. Traditional open toe straight last shoes don’t always fit well and can become loose causing the child’s heels to slide up and down against the back of the shoes. This often results in bright red spots or blisters on the back of the child’s heels. The custom nature of the AFO’s on the Dobbs Brace allows a better lock on the foot and ankle complex which prevents heel slippage and reduces the chances of heel sores.

Another advantage of the Dobbs brace is that the abduction bar is completely adjustable and comes with a quick release feature. This allows the width of the brace to be easily adjusted to accommodate growth. The AFO’s come in many different child friendly designs such as trucks and cars or butterfly’s at no additional cost.
